Spaced Repetition, Explained
Your brain deletes what it doesn’t retrieve.
Here is the uncomfortable thing about the way most students study: the method that feels the most productive is close to the least effective. Re-reading the chapter, re-copying your notes, running a highlighter over the page — these all leave you feeling prepared, and that feeling is the problem. It is the feeling of recognition, not of memory. When you re-read a paragraph you have seen before, it reads smoothly and familiarly, and your brain quietly files that fluency under “I know this.” Then the exam asks you to produce the idea from a blank page, and it is not there.
The forgetting curve
Over a century ago the psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus ran a punishing experiment on himself, memorizing long lists of nonsense syllables and then measuring how fast he forgot them. The result — the forgetting curve — has held up ever since: memory decays quickly at first and then more slowly, and most of what you learn once is gone within days unless something interrupts the decay. Re-reading does not interrupt it very well, because passively re-encountering information does little to strengthen your ability to recall it later.
Two things do interrupt it. The first is retrieval — actually pulling the information out of your memory, from a blank page, which is effortful and feels worse than re-reading and works far better. The second is timing that retrieval so it lands just as you are starting to forget. Each time you successfully recall something on the edge of forgetting, the memory comes back stronger and decays more slowly the next time. Space those retrievals out and the curve flattens. This is spaced repetition, and it is one of the most reliably replicated findings in the science of learning.
What FSRS does differently
The old version of spaced repetition used fixed intervals — review after one day, then three, then a week, the same schedule for every card. That is better than nothing, but it is crude, because not every card is equally hard for you and not every card decays at the same rate. FSRS, the algorithm Chad × Stacy uses for its flashcards, models your memory of each individual card separately. Every time you grade a card as easy or hard, it updates its estimate of how long that specific card will stay retrievable in your head, and schedules the next review for the moment right before you would forget it.
The practical effect is that the cards you find easy stop wasting your time — they stretch out to weeks and months between reviews — while the cards you keep missing come back often, until they stick. You spend your minutes where they matter. Over a semester this compounds: a durable, low-effort review habit beats a series of frantic cram sessions, and it beats them by a margin that surprises people the first time they measure it.
How to start, in three steps
- Make cards you can actually answer. One idea per card, front and back. For a term, put the word on one side and a short definition on the other — and make a second card running the other direction, because recognizing a word is not the same as producing it. Keep them short; a card you can grade in five seconds is a card you will keep reviewing.
- Review every day, briefly. The whole point is that short daily sessions beat marathons. Ten minutes a day, letting the algorithm decide which cards resurface, will outperform a three-hour session the night before, because the three-hour session ignores the timing that makes memory stick.
- Grade yourself honestly. If you had to think hard, mark it hard. The algorithm is only as good as the data you give it, and the temptation to click “easy” because you almost remembered defeats the entire system. Honest grading is what lets the schedule find the right cadence for you.
None of this is specific to one subject. It works for the vocabulary-heavy load of biology, the terminology of psychology, the drug facts of nursing, the vocabulary of a new language. Anywhere you need to hold a lot of discrete facts in your head for a long time, spaced retrieval is the tool. The subjects that are more about problem-solving than memorization need practice more than cards — but even there, the base facts and formulas belong on a spaced schedule.

If you want to still know something in six weeks, you have to practice pulling it out of your head, again and again, spaced across time — and let an algorithm handle the spacing so you can just show up.
