How to study Psychology
Dense terminology and named studies — cards to memorize, examples to apply.
Introductory and intermediate psychology is deceptively hard because it looks like common sense and is graded like a vocabulary exam. The content is enormous: hundreds of terms, dozens of named theorists and their theories, landmark studies with their methods and findings, and — crucially — the ability to recognize a concept when it appears dressed up in a novel scenario. The intuitive familiarity of the subject ("of course people conform to groups") lulls students into under-studying, and then the exam asks them to distinguish normative from informational social influence and the intuition evaporates.
The terminology and the named studies are ideal flashcard material, and there is a lot of it. Put each key term on a card with a concise definition, and make a parallel set for the classic studies: researcher, what they did, what they found, what it demonstrated. Milgram, Zimbardo, Pavlov, Piaget, Loftus — you need to attach the name to the finding in both directions, because exams ask "who demonstrated X" and "what did researcher Y show." Drilling these to fast recall is a large fraction of the battle.
But definitions alone will not pass a good psychology exam, because the harder questions are applied: they give you a short scenario and ask which concept it illustrates. Classical versus operant conditioning, the specific defense mechanism, the cognitive bias at work — recognizing these in a new example is a different skill than reciting the definition, and it is trained differently. For each major concept, collect two or three example scenarios and quiz yourself on identifying the concept from the situation, not the situation from the concept.
Spacing is especially valuable in psychology because so many terms are confusable siblings: the reinforcement schedules, the Piagetian stages, the many "-ism" perspectives, the similar-sounding disorders. Cramming them together the night before guarantees interference — you will half-remember four schedules and confidently swap two. Reviewing across two weeks with an algorithm that resurfaces the ones you keep missing lets each term settle into its own distinct slot rather than blurring with its neighbors.
A powerful psychology technique is building comparison tables from memory: draw the four reinforcement schedules and their response patterns, or the defense mechanisms with an example of each, on a blank page and then check. This forces you to hold the whole confusable set in mind at once and see the distinctions, which is exactly what applied exam questions probe. Do it a few times across the study period and the siblings stop blurring together.
The trap in psychology is that the material feels obvious, so students read the chapter, nod along, and never test whether they can actually produce the terms or apply them. Recognition of a familiar concept is not the same as recall of its precise name or the ability to spot it in disguise. Close the book, self-quiz on definitions and on scenarios, and treat that "this is common sense" feeling as a warning sign rather than a reason to stop studying. The exam rewards precision, not intuition.
